According to the Wings office, the game broke the record for most-attended WNBA game in state history with a crowd of 20,409 at the American Airlines Center. Other league teams in Texas, the now-dissolved Houston Comets and Las Vegas-relocated San Antonio Silver Stars, previously held the state’s attendance records.
Friday's matchup became the eighth WNBA regular season game in history to draw more than 20,000 people, and the Wings now join a small circle of only three other WNBA teams in the league to have hosted a crowd of more than 20,000.
Greater excitement was expected, as the game was set to feature two of the league's fastest-rising stars in Fever point guard Caitlin Clark and the Wings' own Paige Bueckers. However, Clark was sidelined for a second straight game by a left groin injury. Meanwhile, Bueckers led the Wings with 27 points and six assists as guard Arike Ogunbowale put up 15 points, landing the team a final score of 86 against Indiana's 94. Our Wings bounced back the next night when they bested the Washington Mystics 79-71 at College Park Center in Arlington.
Friday's record-breaking game follows thriving demand for women's basketball across the country. Earlier this year, StubHub found that ticket sales for WNBA and Dallas Wings games significantly jolted up to 145% and 343%, respectively.
