Film adaptations of books have long been the saving grace of lazy students tasked with book reports — the old watch-the-movie-instead trick has exposed many a high schooler, and even George Constanza, as a non-reading fraud. Big D Reads, a partnership between D Magazine and Half-Price Books, has been aiming to enrich the literary lives of DISD students by having teens and their families read a classic book together. Currently the featured book is the 1968 Charles Portis Western classic True Grit, a powerful story that's inspired two top-notch films. Joining in on the fun, the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson (100 S. Central Expressway) will host a free screening of the impeccable 1969 adaptation starring John Wayne, who won an overdue Oscar for his role as the drunken Rooster Cogburn. The show starts at 7:45pm; admission is free, but you can reserve a spot for $4 at drafthouse.com/dfw.
