Sometimes, the search for romance can lead us down some interesting roads. There’s the special someone your aunt set you up with and thought would be perfect for you to settle down with. Or the blind date your friend set up. Then there was the time you got that misdirected e-mail and thought the person sounded cute so you replied. We all know that those adventures rarely work out for the best, so you’re left with the prospect of heading out on your own to meet people. Just where does one meet people these days? There’s the Internet, but that’s a little too cliché, and you never know how truthful people are being. Plus, you’re a little wary after the misdirected e-mail incident. There are always bars and clubs, but straining to hear someone yell over the noise of a band isn’t exactly conducive to a pleasurable conversation. There’s the library, but that’s a little too quiet, a little too uncomfortable and just a tad bit too nerdy.
One new possibility is First Fridays, a monthly event at The Dallas Center for Contemporary Art (a.k.a The Contemporary). Held on–you guessed it–the first Friday of every month, visitors can see some of the latest and greatest in contemporary art while mixing and mingling with other art enthusiasts. Beer, wine and snacks will be available, and a DJ plays throughout the night. Quiet enough to allow for conversations and yet not so quiet as to be uncomfortable, First Fridays could be the meeting place you’ve been looking for. If nothing else, you’ll get to view some great artwork and still have enough time to hit the clubs afterward. The first-ever First Friday kicks off this week with works from more than 20 ceramic artists and wood turners, as well as the large figurative drawings of San Antonio native Vincent Valdez.
