We don't buy into the fable that Dallas is a city void of culture, and if you're reading this, you probably don't either.
Culture is constantly shifting, though, so it would be a disservice to reduce it to any singular definition. After all, Culture is influenced by a myriad of things in day-to-day life, with art, of course, being one of them. If you've spent time at any arts spaces in this city — or even just passed street murals while exploring neighborhoods — you know Dallas has culture.
Of course, there's no one way to live in Dallas, but so many things in this city do bring us together — parties and pop-ups in the literal sense and viral social media moments in the digital sense.
Maybe you've had to scrummage through the trenches of the Dallas dating scene, and topics like the rise of covert conservatism on dating apps or the struggles men in North Texas are having with erections ring a little too true to your own experiences.
Or maybe you're ensconced in fine art, fashion or film, often finding that you're a regular at gallery openings and special screenings. If that's the case, you're already part of the heartbeat of the arts around here, so you might as well share your wealth of knowledge while getting paid to do it.
So, if you're interested in becoming a freelancer who chronicles life in North Texas, we want to hear from you.
Send us your resume, plus three writing samples (published links or not) and a few detailed, well-thought-out story ideas. Experience with AP Style is a plus, but we can help you get in the saddle with that. Don't let a lack of extensive writing experience hold you back, either. Much like other crafts, great storytelling gets better with time and practice. And maybe a little snark, too.
Before you draft that email, spend some time thumbing through our arts & culture section to get a feel for the kinds of stories we're looking for. Which stories resonate with you? What kind of coverage do you think we need to tap into more? Those notions will help your own story pitches take shape.
When you're ready, hit up our arts & culture editor to introduce yourself with everything requested above. And if you, too, are chronically online, add a meme, tweet or TikTok that you just had to save or send to the group chat this week — no pressure, we just want to selfishly make checking these emails more fun.
