Balcones Distillery, the folks responsible for the Texas single malt whiskey we tasted back in January, just made news with the Ultimate Beverage Challenge. The Waco-based distillery’s product just won the American whiskey category in a recent spirit evaluation held by the organization, which tastes and scores spirits.

The first place honor rounds out 15 major awards bestowed on the distillery’s pedigreed whiskey.
When we first tasted Balcones single malt, they’d won Best in Glass from a similar spirit evaluator based in Europe. In that competition the Texas-based whiskey beat out mainstays including Macallan and Glenmorangie, and more.
I paid $65 for a bottle of the fabled amber liquid at Sigel’s, which is a pretty penny for sure. But don’t let the cost keep you from at least trying the winner. The single malt and the rest of the Balcones line will be featured at a tasting at tasting event at the Fitzhugh Avenue location of Sigel’s from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. tomorrow. (Wednesday, March 27.)
