Leading up to our annual Best of Dallas® issue, we’re counting down the 50 most interesting restaurants in Dallas. These spots bring something unique or compelling to the city’s dining scene, feeding both your appetite and soul.
When we go out to dine we expect the food will be good, otherwise we’d stay at home and throw another frozen pizza in the oven and call it a day. But sometimes good food is not enough, and when we’re out searching for a meal, we hope to encounter dishes and ingredients that will teach us something new. If you want steak cooked medium and a wedge salad or you’re in the mood for a plate that swims in enchilada sauce, you can find plenty of other lists for that. If you’re looking for something different, read on.
I can’t think of a better restaurant to kick off a list of most interesting restaurants than Everest Indian & Himalayan Restaurant and Grill in Irving. The menu available in this humble dining room is full of dishes you won’t find elsewhere in Dallas. Start with a few orders of dumplings, making sure not to miss the goat momo in chili sauce. Opt for fried dumplings over steamed for a better texture.
Next, tear into a menu filled with curries stews and plenty of grilled meats.The grilled quail is a welcome change from the Dallas standard: spicy, juicy and flanked by raw onions and puffed rice for crunch.
Everest Restaurant is BYOB, but don’t worry. If you’ve forgotten your booze, a convenience store is on the opposite side of Rochelle Road. You’ll find a terrible wine selection but plenty of decent beers to choose from. Whatever you choose, don’t come empty handed, though. You’ll be the only diner without a bottle or two on his table.
