This year, Denise Garza (with her sister Norma and her niece Roxanne) made it to the second round of the Big Tex Choice Awards with Heavenly Deep-Fried Brownies.
While the concept of frying a brownie isn’t completely new to this fair (last year, Abel Gonzales Jr. made it to the finals round with his “fried chocolate,” which was really a fried brownie plus white chocolate and a cherry), Garza and her family did one thing with their product that Gonzales didn’t: they named it properly. It’s a fried brownie. How ’bout we call it that, shall we?
(No, Gonzales, I’m still not done giving you crap for that one. Seriously — just “fried chocolate?” Dude. Guess you’d probably be kicking yourself for that one if you weren’t so busy Scrooge McDuck-swimming through your sea of gold doubloons and Big Tex Awards trophies.)
Gonzales isn’t serving his fried chocolate (wow, that’s such a lame name) this year, because he’s going to be busy with all the fried pineapple upside down cake hubbub, so I’m so ecstatic to hear that a fried brownie will be available from another vendor. Christi Erpillo will be serving a fried brownie garnish with a glass of chocolate wine, but garnish smarnish, sometimes you want a real deal, big ol’ fried brownie. A state fair without a big ol’ fried brownie is like a STATE FAIR WITHOUT A BIG OL’ FRIED BROWNIE.
Garza and her family spent a long time perfecting the recipe for this fried brownie, and I’m sure it’s amazing. She says, “Even though we did not make it past round two, the thrill of even attempting the contest after 28 years of serving our hearts out to the fairgoers was satisfying for us. We are excited to share our Heavenly Deep Fried Brownies with all those chocolate lovers out there ready for their taste buds to burst.” You heard it here first: Garza’s serving up a fried brownie tastesplosion.
Garza says her parents, Trini and Benilde Garza, “started the business at the fair 28 years ago, introducing fajitas to the fairgoers. We still operate that first fajita stand in its original location.”
The Heavenly Deep Fried Brownies, dusted with powdered sugar and served with chocolate-cherry syrup ambrosia, will be at Garza’s stand on Grand Avenue near the Chevy stage (next to the Cotton Candy Stand).
Not into fried brownies? (Freak.) In addition to the fried brownies and the fajitas and nachos and pizza, this year the Garzas will be serving up tacos al pastor. ¡Tacos! ¡Al! ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Pastor!!!!!!!!!
I only have one question for you, The Garzas: When are you frying those tacos al pastor and can I please be there when it happens and can I please immediately eat some of them with my face? Keep an eye on those Garzas for next year’s competition. Fried game on.
