I knew I’d be hearing from people as soon as I compiled a list of great soups. Sure enough, I forgot to mention the tomato soup at City Cafe–there is none better. But along with the soup reminder came a recommendation of the Blum’s cake next door at City Cafe to Go. Blum’s in San Francisco, like Schrafft’s in New York, is a lunch-time legend. City Cafe has recreated their famous cake, made from their famous candy. Four layers of angel-food cake layered with whipped cream, studded with the brittle candy and served with warm caramel sauce. For $3 (50 cents for the sauce), this is the cheapest rush in town.

City Cafe to Go, 5757 W. Lovers Lane, 351-3366.
