UPDATE 1:53 p.m.: We called FOX Broadcasting Company to see if Homer Simpson wanted to weigh in. We got a response. This is what Homer (THE Homer Simpson) had to say:
“In honor of National Donut Day I will take a moment to remember all the brave donuts that have died in my stomach.”
Today is doughnut day? Why yes it is, not that you would know from the lackluster reaction of local doughnut shops.
Even 2010’s Best Doughnut Shop, Hypnotic Donuts, didn’t have a promotion — thanks primarily to the fact that they’re only open on weekends. Owner James St. Peter assures us that Hypnotic does indeed honor and respect Doughnut Day and “This time next year we’ll be jamming on Doughnut Day.”
Will you step up to support Dallas Observer this year?
We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If the Dallas Observer matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
Fortunately for your inner Homer Simpson, doughnut titans Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts are both running all-day specials. You can get one free doughnut of your choice from any Krispy Kreme with no purchase necessary. Dunkin Donuts will give you a free doughnut when you purchase a drink.
Legend has it that the holiday got its start back in 1938 when the Chicago Salvation Army wanted to honor the women who had volunteered to serve — doughnuts that is — to World War I soldiers. Now Doughnut Day falls on the first Friday of every June, conveniently close to Memorial Day and not-so-conveniently in the middle of bikini season.
