The Design District is on its way to becoming known for its beer culture as much as it is high end furniture and art galleries. The folks behind Noble Ray Brewery have announced they’ll be setting up shop as the fourth beer maker in the neighborhood. Meddlesome Moth’s seemingly endless run of beer taps only adds to a part of Dallas that’s practically floating in frothy suds.
The decision to move came after an extended effort to shoehorn the brewery into an Oak Cliff address. Partners Chris Rigoulot and Justin Krey had their sights set on a 1930s building near the Tom Landry Freeway, but the old construction proved to be an issue. A filled fermentation tank can weigh as much as 10,000 pounds, and breweries need lots of tanks. The ability of the floors to support the load was in question.
Rigoulot says he wanted to stay in Oak Cliff, but it didn’t make sense, and they got a great deal on a building in the Design District. As a bonus, the new property already had some plumbing work completed that would save them time and money. The new location made sense, and now Nobel Rey will join Peticolas, Community Brewery and the coming Texas Ale Projec in the Design District, making it the most beer-soaked neighborhood in Dallas.
To stand out, Krey says, Noble Rey will have a tap room that invites guests to stay and drink. They’re also planning to brew new beers regularly in an attempt to teach guests about new beers at the same time the brewing team navigates their way through new recipes. They hope that brewer and drinker will evolve together in harmony. And if not, at least everyone will be a little sauced.
Will you step up to support Dallas Observer this year?
We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If the Dallas Observer matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
The team has taken delivery of their tanks as seen in the picture above, but Rigoulot says they still have a lot of work to do before they pull the handles on any taps in their tasting room. They’re hoping to start serving before the winter is over, though. Hopefully they’ll pull it off in time for some refreshing Saison.
