Motor City Pizza started as a pop-up ghost kitchen during the pandemic, and is one of our favorite pizza spots. Now this Lewisville staple is named one of the top Detroit-style pizza joints in the country, outside of Michigan.
“To be considered among the best of the best, we were looking for places that were staying truly authentic to the original style — and getting that oh-so-important crust perfectly right,” Tasting Table stated about its criteria. “Creative toppings were a bonus, but the pepperoni had to be on point, and awards were the icing on the cake.”
Tasting Table is a global publication that over 18 million readers subscribe to for expert-backed dining advice, practical tips, must-try recipes and relevant food and restaurant news for the modern diner.
To curate this list, the team began by constuling Redditors to get out-of-state recommendations from Detroit natives. Then, they looked for highly-rated places that had the perfect Detroit-style crust, edge-to-edge cheese and crispiness and high-quality ingredients.

Creativity, ability to accommodate dietary restrictions, commitment to local sourcing, seasonal specialties, and — of course — awards and accolades were all taken into account for the finalized list.

“Calling a pizzeria Motor City Pizza means there’s some seriously high expectations here, and customers say it’s meeting and surpassing any and all of those expectations. Some say that it has to be tried to be fully appreciated, and we get that.
Even those who have traditionally avoided Detroit-style pizzas in favor of styles with thinner crusts say that this is the place that changed their minds, with others confirming that it’s the crust that stands out here as that ideal combination of flavorful, firm, and pillowy,” Kelly wrote “Fan favorites include the Detroiter — with brick cheese, pepperoni, and sauce — as well as the Texas Sweet Heat with pepperoncini, pepperoni, hot honey, and candied jalapeños.”
Grey Tierney, owner of Motor City Pizza, said he was “honored, ecstatic and humbled to be recognized for this. Out of all the Detroit-style pizza restaurants in this country, to be named as one of the best, is truly an honor”.

Motor City Pizza is located at 1425 FM 407 in Lewisville and is open on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
