TC Shaved Ice

Mosquitoes. Heat stroke. Sky-high utility bills. The dreaded butt sweat. Summer in Dallas brings a plague of problems, but there are bright spots to be had: the annual opening of TC Shaved Ice, for one. The tiny light blue drive-thru hut on Garland Road draws droves of icy treat-seeking Dallasites in need of some cool respite during the scorching months. The name of the game here is shaved ice in a plethora of different varieties; the ice is shaved ultra-fine into fluffy snow, rather than the crunchy chunks you may be used to with snow cones. Get your Styrofoam cup o’ snow drenched with any one (or a combination) of the brightly colored flavor syrups, from cherry and blue coconut to tiger’s blood and wedding cake. Those with a serious sweet tooth can opt for the “Knockout,” which adds a scoop of ice cream to the party.
