Here’s what we do know: Aiden’s a decent draw with the teenage crowds, and we’ve never heard of Ivoryline (although their CD did just come into the office…), Farewell to Freeway or Me Vs. The Sea.
Here’s what we don’t know: How Schoolyard Heroes ended up on this bill—because, sight unseen with most of the other acts, they’re by far the coolest name on this bill, and because, uh, they don’t really have the kind of reputation where you’d think they’d be welcomed by a Christian-leaning venue such as this one.
The backstory? Not too long ago, an online petition began circling around the parental set, proclaiming these female-fronted goth punkers to be Satanists. The band flat-out denies the claim—but that didn’t stop the petition from gathering more than 400 signatures, a number of which came from concerned parents, hoping to put an end to this band’s onstage antics (mock hangings with mic wires, for one) and lyrics (“Take off your skin and dance with me/Cut off your tongue and sing for me/Burn out your eyes in effigy, baby/Scream out your heart in agony”). It didn’t work; the band, obviously, is still touring. Which is a good thing for the Fuse-loving set that’s just aching for an act to come along that’s basically just a darker Paramore, with a better sense of humor.
