This summer is heating up with its fair share of surprises, from Erykah Badu’s Juneteenth concert to BigXThaPlug and Shaboozey shutting down the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge for their upcoming song “Home.” For R&B lovers, another heavy hitter has shocked the social media feeds, and it’s undoubtedly an answer to many long-awaited prayers after their historic Verzuz battle of R&B titans in 2020.
On the morning of Tuesday, June 24, Grammy Award-winning artists Brandy and Monica took to CBS News Mornings to officially announce their The Boy Is Mine Tour…finally. Fans have anxiously awaited this live reunion since the 1998 hit “The Boy Is Mine” spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Spanning a more than 25-year rivalry, this will be the first time that the two R&B artists have co-headlined a tour, which obviously struck up an immediate fan frenzy. The pair were last seen in Dallas for the Femme It Forward Concert series in October of 2019, alongside Mya and Keri Hilson—but never together as headliners.
“This really is a full-circle moment. Monica and I coming together again isn’t just about the music—it’s about honoring where we came from and how far we’ve both come. ‘The Boy Is Mine’ was a defining chapter in R&B, and to share the stage all these years later is bigger than a reunion—it’s a celebration of growth, sisterhood and the love our fans have given us from day one,” Brandy said in a press release.
“The love that ‘The Boy Is Mine’ continues to receive means everything to me. This tour is a celebration of our history, our impact and the fans who have grown with us. Brandy and I have been on our own unique journeys, and coming back together in this way is a reminder of the power of respect, strength and real music. We’re giving the people what they’ve been asking for, and doing it with grace, love and purpose. God’s timing perfectly aligned us,” Monica added.
Kicking off Oct. 16, the 24-city tour will include a Fort Worth stop scheduled for Dec. 6 at Dickies Arena and conclude on Dec. 7 in Houston. Brandy and Monica will be supported by Kelly Rowland, Muni Long and 2025 American Idol winner Jamal Roberts. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 27, at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com. In honor of this “cultural homecoming”—as it’s being coined—here are 10 songs that must make the setlist for any Brandy and Monica fan to truly feel at ease.
Brandy - “I Wanna Be Down” (1994)
From Brandy’s self-titled debut album, this 1994 hit was sung in every school hall, dance and locker room. Channeling the spirit of young love, this ’90s throwback is sure to have concertgoers in their feels. But, woo us with the remix please featuring Queen Latifah, Yo-Yo and MC Lyte. It was always the remix that had fans really wanting to be down with all that Brandy brought to the music scene. Monica - “Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” (1995)
Just following Brandy’s debut, Monica hit the scene with this 1995 classic from her inaugural album Miss Thang. It was everything sassy, saucy and bold—a testament to what girls were really going through, without the vocal know-how to say it. The more feisty of the two, Monica played to the beautifully brazen personalities, while still flourishing in her femme. Brandy - “Best Friend” (1994)
An ode to her younger brother, Ray J, “Best Friend” was the catalyst for countless dedications to besties around the world. The third hit off of her debut album, this song truly propelled Brandy’s career, as it was also featured on her viral hit TV series, Moesha. Talk about some after-school nostalgia! Monica - “Before You Walk Out of My Life” (1995)
One of Monica's first ballads and the second single off of her debut album, this was the first time listeners could truly grasp the vocal range she possessed. With the intensity of the lyrics and her embodiment of emotions, it was hard to believe that the R&B star was only 14 years old when this hit took off. Brandy - “Sittin' Up In My Room” (1995)
In the era of binge-watching back-to-back music videos, this song (and video) ranked high on the charts of our reminiscence. Featured on the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, “Sitting Up In My Room” was one of five singles released from the film starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1995. Combined with hits from Houston, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, TLC and others, Brandy seamlessly forged generations at a moment when women’s empowerment was at an all-time high. Monica - “The First Night” (1998)
Off the 1998 The Boy is Mine album, “The First Night” was an up-tempo battle between a girl succumbing to her desires on the first date, or playing it cool, calm and collected. Keeping it real once again, the chart-topping hit features a sampling from Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover,” and prominently features Jermaine Dupri’s vocals, who was artistically in his prime during this era. Y'all know what this is!Brandy - “Angel In Disguise” (1998)
If “a vibe” were a song, this 1999 track would be it. This hit came during the era of off-beat percussion (think Timbaland beats and Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” futuristic funk), modern electronic elements, and atmospheric sounds. Brandy was evolving as an artist, maturing and this song took her fans on a ride. Monica - “So Gone” (2003)
What is a ’90s, 2000s list without mentioning Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott? Written and produced by Missy, “So Gone” is still at the tip of our tongues to this day. Heavily mixed by DJs locally and abroad, this hit from Monica’s fourth studio album, After the Storm, has transcended generations and even become the background for a viral social media frenzy called the #SoGoneChallenge. Brandy - “Full Moon” (2002)
This R&B-meets-pop tune channels a futuristic vibe, heavy with bass, electro-chords and lower vocals for singer-songwriter Brandy. Released on her third studio album, this 2002 song follows the songstress as she falls in love at first sight on a full moon night. For Brandy fans, this marked a moment of progression and maturity for the singer as she was with child at the time of the music video, amongst going through many other life changes, and yet, she continued on. Brandy & Monica - “The Boy Is Mine” (1998)
It goes without saying that this head-to-head tune will be the pinnacle of the concert. After more than 25 years since its release, fan-goers are still choosing sides as to who will win the boy, Brandy, or Monica. Most likely to be the last song of the setlist, it will be worth every minute and every year we've had to wait for this. Brandy and Monica will perform on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. at Dickies Arena, 911 Montgomery St, Fort Worth. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
