The microphone was all the way on when Coco Jones brought the heat to Dallas during her sold-out Why Not More? Tour stop on Friday, June 13 at House of Blues.
The multi-hyphenate was first introduced to the public through her acting skills in Disney's 2012 original movie, Let It Shine. She then made numerous appearances on the network's TV shows So Random! and Good Luck Charlie. Disney was the launchpad that led to her landing the role of Hilary Banks in Peacock's Bel-Air, a reboot of the '90s hit series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Although she achieved success as an actress, music has always been a passion of Jones. She has released singles throughout her career but gained notoriety for her vocals on TikTok through singing covers.
Jones' dreams of becoming a recognized singer have been unfolding over the past few years, as her music has been steadily climbing the charts. In 2022, the songwriter emerged as one of the new faces of R&B following the success of her EP, What I Didn't Tell You, a year after signing with Def Jam in February 2022. The project was certified Gold and earned her five Grammy Award nominations, winning the Grammy for Best R&B Performance for her lead single "ICU." Keeping the momentum going, she dropped her Grammy-nominated singles "Here We Go (Uh Oh)," which was nominated for two Grammys, and "Most Beautiful Design" in 2024 before releasing her promotional song "Sweep It Up" later that year.
In February, Jones announced her nationwide headlining tour across 33 cities to support her debut 17-track album, Why Not More? via an Instagram post ahead of its April release. Nearly a month later, the musician revealed that the tour will be heading over the pond to Europe for an additional leg, featuring six cities.
The tour kicked off in May in Philadelphia, and when it arrived in Dallas, the songstress's fans could finally release their pent-up anticipation. There were two openers on the bill to warm up the crowd. The first was a singer named TA Thomas, a Mississippi native whose church roots were evident from the very first note. His set blended heartfelt originals with fresh remixes of classics. At one point, he hopped offstage to sing face-to-face with fans. He celebrated the moment by saying, "I'm in the right section, and y'all smell good." His high-energy stage presence made for the perfect kick-off to the night.
The second special guest, rapper Lady London, is featured on the track "Is It Mine" from Jones' latest album. The New York native took the stage with vibrancy, walking out to her freestyle over Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody." She had a heartfelt moment during her performance, saying a prayer for the crowd before launching into a song of affirmation, during which she handed out roses to the audience. "That’s why I love me some Dallas, Texas," she exclaimed after the crowd snapped their fingers on the DJ’s cue as a sign of wanting to hear her poetry. She wrapped up her performance with her biggest single, "Pop Ya Shit."
The crowd was charged up with energy when it was finally time for the Jones to hit the stage, which had a white curtain backdrop and a staircase leading up to a digital circle screen with graphics. The audience roared when she appeared in a royal blue bedazzled corset outfit and launched her set by singing "Taste," a rendition of Britney Spears' hit song "Toxic." Fans sang along word for word with her sultry voice, which carried through her entire hour-long set. Something that immediately couldn't be missed was her dance moves, especially when she ended "Keep it Quiet" with an electrifying dance break.
She sang more songs from Why Not More? before exiting the stage for a brief intermission. The stage plunged into darkness with red lights spinning in the digital sphere before the beat dropped for "Most Beautiful Design," her collaboration with London on da Track and Future. She resurfaced with sleeves on to sing the song.
Sitting down in a chair, she did an intimate run-through of "On Sight," complete with water-rippling background images that eased the crowd.
Jones returned with "Double Back," then paused again for a silhouette dance that had her and her dancers weaving around a single chair before teasing the crowd with a playful tribute to a fan named Will, whose girlfriend she shouted out.
"Alright, Dallas! Y’all are lit as fuck!" Jones said.
She sang her beloved song "ICU" before tricking everyone with a fake closing, only to return to the stage with "Here We Go (Uh Oh)." Voices erupted fast, sounding like a mass choir, as fans standing on the floor level and in the balcony section stood and sang every word intensely.
"You’re the best crowd I've had so far," she beamed at the end. "I love you so much, Dallas. I'll see you next time."
The vibe spilled over to the hallways of the House of Blues as attendees exited the show and sang Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together."
"The overall experience was really good. The vibes were really good," Rekha Sharma said about Jones' show. "It was chill. It was very fun. Everyone was having a good time. Everyone knew every song, which was really cool."
"I think it was a really good show. She has an amazing stage presence. I'm considering going to Austin tomorrow," Teri Pierre shared in agreement.
"I really loved the show. I think she really gave her all to Dallas," Jeremy Hallbrook shared about his experience. "Oh my goodness! The crowd was lively, especially in my section. My section was so lit, and honestly, I think that made the concert better."
Jones' North American tour dates wrap on June 26 in Nashville.
