More than most years, 33-year-old Dallas singer-songwriter Joshua Ray Walker is likely feeling particularly grateful this Thanksgiving.

Walker was diagnosed in January with stage 3B colon cancer. While preparing for surgery in September, he learned that the cancer had spread to his lungs. But now he is cancer-free.

He shared the great news in recent posts to Facebook and Instagram, a shocking — and shockingly positive — development, given that less than five weeks earlier, he’d been staring down a bleak battle against stage 4 cancer.

“I’m so excited to share with you that my pre-surgery diagnosis was incorrect,” Walker wrote on Oct. 25. “I’ve beat the odds and to everyone’s complete surprise, my lungs are cancer-free. As far as my doctors can tell, there is no discernible amount of cancer anywhere in my body at the moment! I am ecstatic, and I couldn’t have done it without y’all’s love and support.

“I won’t be in remission for another five years, and I will have frequent tests and scans done during that time, but for now, my life is not in imminent danger. That’s a crazy thing to say considering the odds I was told I was up against a little over a month ago.”

Indeed, Walker began a GoFundMe campaign at the time of his initial pre-surgery diagnosis to help him cover the costs of treatment and any other bills. He had effectively halted touring (and sacrificing his income) so he could focus on his treatment and recovery.

Now, Walker is loading up his calendar.

He’ll appear locally at The Kessler Theater on Nov. 27 as part of the annual Friendsgiving concert. Then, he'll head to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Dec. 5 to open for Brent Cobb before closing out the year in Tulsa at Cain’s Ballroom, supporting Silverada and Vandoliers.

In 2025, Walker already has a busy February and March on deck, with dates throughout Texas, Florida, Colorado, Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

“My main goal now is to be the healthiest version of myself possible, and that would be an impossible pursuit if not for your help conquering the insurmountable financial situation I found myself in,” Walker wrote in October. “I’m so excited to be alive, I’m excited to share this incredible news with you, and I’m excited to make the most of this opportunity. I love y’all so much — thank you for loving me back.”
