Depending which metalhead you ask, metal is either being saved or being strychnined by Dethklok, the cartoon band at the center of the Adult Swim show Metalocalypse. On the one hand, the group makes fun of just about everything that made metal cool; on the other hand, they totally shred!
The real-life band, which features Metalocalypse creator Brendon Small on guitar, performs in front of a backdrop of cartoon characters, leaving no doubt as to the real-life musicians’ talents with battle-ax and thunder sticks. Any band that can headline a bill stacked with Mastodon and High on Fire is surely legit, but to update the old Waylon Jennings proverb for a modern metal audience: Are you sure Judas Priest done it this way?
