The New Orleans sludge metal acts Eyehategod and Crowbar brought the Louisiana mugginess and heavy riffs to Club Dada on Wednesday evening to a more-than-ready crowd.

Crowbar frontman Kirk Windstein commented to concertgoers that the audiences in Dallas have always been great, even since touring with Pantera in the '80s. Indeed, the crowd did not disappoint, even with the humidity permeating throughout the pit.

It’s the perfect pairing for a rowdy response: two New Orleans bands born from the same metal scene in the late '80s and early '90s.

Local four-piece ATM opened the show as the crowd was still gathering, but still laid out a blistering warm-up for the night with a pop of death metal in their sludgy sound.

Fort Worth’s Born in Blood injected a metalcore bend as they donned fake blood and gave off an inkling of Slipknot’s imagery.

For this tour, Crowbar and Eyehategood have been swapping out time slots. Crowbar was up first this time in Dallas, and they were definitely the band most people were there to see. As they played the beginning of “Conquering,” it was time to brace yourself in the pit.

Windstein has been forced to perform while sitting for this tour due to a back injury, but nonetheless, Crowbar brought the heavy riffing that fans have come to expect from a band decades into their career.

One downside to the night had nothing to do with the bands but only the select few kids who decided to take selfies and record themselves on stage instead of instantly stage diving. They’ll learn eventually, but let’s not make it solely a TikTok moment, folks.

Eyehategod had the pleasure of ending the show. As they ended the set with “Every Thing, Every Day,” it was incredible to think about the several iterations of metal fans, from the '80s thrash fans to the current generations, who all arrived at the same sweaty venue in the middle of the week to see two headliners still bringing everything they have.

After Corpus Christi and Austin, the tour will make New Orleans its final stop on Aug. 30, where Crowbar will headline.
