Like a lot of teenage girls in the ’90s, I spent years pining for Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale, inscribing the words to “Comedown” on my zip-up Mead binder and dutifully chugging out the chords to “Machinehead” on my guitar. But my adolescence, like Bush, is over, so how excited should a former fangirl get about Rossdale’s new band, Institute? Really, new single “Bulletproof Skin” sounds like it could have been peeled off any Bush album, with Rossdale’s sexy, swaying vocals supported by overproduced guitars and a hustling chorus that begs for visuals of hot girls driving fast cars. Cock rock much? Well, kind of, says Rossdale, who’s bringing the group for a little show-and-tell at the Tea Room. “The first thing after Bush, I just wanted to fuckin’ rock it!” Rossdale says, and dripping testosterone certainly didn’t hurt his career last time. Institute’s heavier sound and stripped-down club show might be just enough of the same old thing to keep old fans interested. Plus, we can totally wear our old Jnco jeans to the concert.
