After playing in every band on every label on every song in the Nashville music scene (a fuzzed-out execution showcased on 2008’s Matador Records singles comp), 2009’s Watch Me Fall acknowledges Jay Reatard‘s death wish with overblown, poppy drama in two-minute increments. Though recent documentary Waiting for Something worked hard to portray Reatard as an industrious genius who always wears the same Strapping Fieldhands T-shirt, it couldn’t stop the Elvis comparisons. Fittingly, take this quote from a recent Village Voice interview: “Most of the time, what’s wrong with you is more interesting than what’s right. What’s right with you is fucking boring.”
