On Saturday, Dallasites experienced what you could say was Texas’s version of the best day ever.
The Texas Longhorns beat the Oklahoma Sooners 23-6 in the Red River Rivalry, which took place at the annual State Fair of Texas, where deep-fried food concoctions are king.
If you waded through the sea of burnt orange and crimson swirling around the Cotton Bowl, the Chevrolet Main Stage had one of hip-hop’s national treasures and Houston’s own Paul Wall performing.
Videos from the performance were shared online. Wall has been on The Great Wall Tour to celebrate 20 years of his commercial debut The Peoples Champ, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. He was actually here over the summer, performing at The Lexus Box Garden at Legacy Hall. If you missed that appearance, you had a second chance to see him at the State Fair of Texas.
One of his surprise guests he brought out was Frankie J, making sure his first time performing at the State Fair of Texas was one to remember. The pair toured together last year and collaborated on songs such as “On the Floor” and “With You.”
Wall also performed classics such as “Chuck Up the Deuce,” among others.
Both Wall and Frankie J expressed gratitude for the thousands of fans who still came out to see them, a testament to their longevity in music.
Although we love hearing Wall’s older material, he’s been steadily putting out new music. In July, he collaborated with Bay Area maestro DJ Fresh for an album called The Tonite Show. Songs like “Husslin For Eons” and “Blantons Tonite” show he’s on his grown man shit and always on his grind.
With just one week left of the State Fair of Texas, there’s still more performers to see, such as Kylie Morgan, Brother’s Doobie, Madam Radar, Hoobastank and Louie TheSinger. Revisit our guide of the 15 artists you need to see at the State Fair and keep them in mind for next year.
