This inaugural Deep Ellum “folk-alternative event” promises to take an “under-appreciated genre” and showcase it in an “underrated, historic neighborhood.” I wasn’t aware folk was so misunderstood and in need of a makeover in Dallas, especially since there seem to be between 10 and 15 bands that could be categorized as such playing every weekend. However, this Saturday, there are five stages filled with Texas acts that excel in variations on the genre, including Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Possessed by Paul James, Ryan Thomas Becker, The Will Callers, Kirby Brown, Telegraph Canyon and The O’s. The press release goes on to say, “Hippie influence minimized and all drum circles will be squarely eliminated.” So there’s that to look forward to as well.
