Atlanta garage rockers The Black Lips are no strangers to praise. Last year’s Good Bad Not Evil was a fairly well-regarded release in critics’ circles, only helping add stock to this fuzzed-up retro act’s reputation as one of the best and craziest live shows currently touring the States. It’s tough to say how these two same-day sets will pan out, though; constant reference to the Black Lips’ onstage antics in publications such as this one have left audiences a tad miffed when the band doesn’t do something like, say, cold-cock each other mid-song.
Of the two performances, the Good Records afternoon in-store will certainly be the more toned-down; it’s an all-acoustic set. That alone makes this an interesting performance—but the fact that it’s free doesn’t hurt either. Later that night at The Loft is where you can really expect these guys to throw down. How they’ll choose to do so is tough to say, but considering this show doesn’t start until 8 or so, we can at least cross our fingers, hope that these guys bought their booze in advance and that they’re good and sauced by the time they hit the stage. Because, really, that’s how we prefer our rock stars when they have such drunken reputations.
