Today is One Hit Wonder day, allegedly marked by music journalist Steven R Rosen to honor the bands whose moment passed too soon. He was serious about this topic, even briefly publishing One Shot: The Magazine of One-Hit Wonders.
DFW has had its share of flash-in-the-pan chart success, and we’ve compiled the seven best examples. Some of these artists had their careers cut tragically short, and some were probably taken aback to be in the chart spotlight to begin with.

Deep Blue Something – “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” We’re kicking off the list with Deep Blue Something’s “Breakfast at Tiffanys”. The 1995 hit single landed on the Billboard Top 100 chart, and is probably the area’s best example of a one-hit wonder.
*****
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians – “What I Am”The Dallas-based band is most known for this 1988 track, but there’s plenty more to the catalogue.
*****
Vanilla Ice – “Ice Ice Baby”Maybe Vanilla Ice’s career would have gone in a different direction had he been more grateful to Queen and Bowie for the sample.
*****
The D.O.C – “It’s Funky Enough”Unfortunately, after this 1989 chart-topper was released, The D.O.C was seriously injured in a car crash, in which his larynx was crushed. We’re sure there would have been more hits to follow.
*****
MC 900 Ft. Jesus – “If I Only Had a Brain”Fun fact: Spike Jonze directed the video for MC 900 Ft. Jesus’ one big hit, “If I Only Had a Brain.”
*****
Ryan Cabrera – “On The Way Down”This Dallasite is known for two things: this pop hit and his brief career in reality TV (he made several appearances on The Hills).
*****
Lisa Loeb – “Stay (I Missed You)” While Lisa Loeb never returned to the top of the charts after her first single, she did continue to sell plenty of her next several albums. And let’s not forget her eyewear line. When in doubt, diversify your empire.
