Support the independent voice of Dallas and help keep the future of Dallas Observer free.
We had many fine entries in our caption contest today; thanks to the Friends who played along for Wilco tix. Here are just three of our favorites:
Southside on Lamar, where toxic gas fumes are on the house!
It's finally gone ... wait, Deep Ellum is the other way ...
Run, get to the chopper!
Thanks to all who played; we'll have more stuff to give away in coming days, swear. And we do appreciate that many of you made your entries topical; several suggested the smoke had something to do with former Mayor Laura Miller ("diabolical," wrote someone) and/or the Trinity Toll Road. But the UP brain trust, which read every entry without knowing who sent 'em in, has selected a winner. And it comes from longtime local powerhouse Jeff West, who brings us this:
After 70 years of neglect, North Dallas developers finally agree South Dallas real estate is really starting to catch fire.
Jeff, we will contact you about how to get your ducats. And, of course, mazel tov. --Robert Wilonsky
Keep the Dallas Observer Free... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Dallas with no paywalls.
