White Rock Lake celebrates its 100th birthday next year -- why, matter of fact, here's historian Watermelon Kid's commemorative tee, offered "tongue-in-cheek," of course. And the city's got 100 days of events -- from regattas and runs to festivals and fashion shows -- planned to mark the occasion, beginning March 19 with an official kickoff party that'll actually take place after a few other less formal events get to Rockin' and rollin' to a Centennial Concert on June 26 (see what I did there?). The full rundown follows.
The city also unveiled its commemorative logo today; that's it up top. I rather like it; so too does our art director, Alexander Flores, who notes that it's in keeping with the "new aesthetic that appreciates the old craft of design."
Of course, the honorary chair for the weeks' worth of wingdings is Ebby Halliday, who likewise turns 100 next year. Says the Regal Realtor in the city's heads-up: "I am honored that my birthday is being associated with this exciting milestone. White Rock Lake is a city treasure and the events surrounding its centennial will benefit the lake and our community for years to come." Also, notes the city:
Proceeds from Centennial events will fund capital projects and improvements as identified by the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department. A special fund under the Dallas Parks Foundation has been set up and will be administered by the Dallas Foundation. "Partnering and sponsorship opportunities are available to individuals and businesses interested in helping us preserve one of our most precious resources," said Event Co-chair Reena Morris. "We are now actively seeking donations to meet our fund raising goal of $300,000."Jump for the schedule of events.
