The Atlanta Journal-Constitution yesterday broke the news that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a hand in Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino's suddenly bolting for the University of Arkansas a few days ago. Which didn't please Falcons owner Arthur Blank, not one damned bit. As in,
Jones, a former Arkansas football player, first phoned Blank last Thursday afternoon and told the Falcons owner he had gotten a call from the chairman of the board at Arkansas. The school wanted permission to speak to Petrino, Blank said. "I almost dropped the phone," Blank said.
"From my perspective, the answer is no," Blank said he told Jones. But Blank told Jones to call Rich McKay, the Falcons' president and general manager, for a formal answer.
And this morning, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Bil Zwecker is insisting that Tony Romo's so bonkers over Jessica Simpson, the Dallas Cowboys QB is "doing a bit of ring shopping." I doubt that merits the exclamation mark with which Zwecker ends that sentence. --Robert Wilonsky
