There will be multiple rallies this weekend highlighting the need for equity in education and other issues.

Fear of tyranny was a common theme at the March 4 anti-Trump protest in Dealey Plaza. Another 50501 protest will take place at the same spot this weekend.

2025 is less than halfway over, and the list of protests that have flooded many streets, city hall plazas and parks in North Texas is rather long. Even longer is the list of issues that have been highlighted in the rallies. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, Elon Musk’s DOGE-powered overreach, U.S. involvement with the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and LGBTQ concerns have all seen countless colorful signs tout the fears and frustrations of many who feel under attack by the current administration.

The 50501 Mobilizes for Education Equity rally will take place in Dealey Plaza on Saturday, May 17, beginning at 12 p.m.

“Our upcoming protest will feature speakers and educators highlighting the need for equity in education (public and private), democracy, and collective action, ending with a peaceful demonstration,” stated a press release for the protest. Donations of books and non-perishable food items to benefit the community will also be accepted during the event.

“As billionaires tighten their grip on government, 50501 reminds America that true power belongs to the people,” the press release says. “We believe every child deserves the best possible education, every voice matters, and every citizen can shape the future. You don’t need wealth or status to defend democracy – your voice is enough. Whether this is your first protest or your fiftieth, you are welcome and needed.”

The event will also commemorate the landmark May 17, 1954, Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which ruled that state-sanctioned segregation of public schools was unconstitutional.

What is the 50501 Movement?

The name itself is simple to explain: 50 states, 50 protests, 1 day. The movement’s official website gives other hints with phrases including “We The People,” “Reject Project 2025” and “Fight Fascism” featured on the page that leads to social media channels. “The current administration has made it clear: profits over people. We refuse to stand by while they dismantle our rights, our communities, and our future,” reads a post on the group’s official Reddit page regarding the upcoming protests.

“We are not just numbers. We are not just consumers. We are the People. We reject fascism. We reject the oligarchy. We reject any system that places profit, power, or privilege over human dignity.” Also listed on Reddit are some demands the movement is making. “Donald Trump and his administration need to address the American people and own up to his lies and acknowledge the harm caused by his administration,” the Reddit page states. “Our coalition calls for immediate actions to rectify the injustices perpetuated by current leadership and to restore integrity and fairness to our political system. We demand transparency, accountability, and the prioritization of human rights and equality.”

Where are the Other 50501 Protests?

The Collin County Democratic Party, in partnership with 50501, will host a “Stand Up for Democracy” rally in Frisco on Saturday, May 17 at 9 a.m. at the southeast corner of Preston Road and Gaylord Parkway. According to the event’s registration page, chief protest targets are “Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists, who continue to undermine free elections and push authoritarian agendas,” as well as “Elon Musk, whose unchecked influence and platforming of far-right extremism endanger our democracy.”
