Remember way back when, way back when January was barely a week old and we had snow and frigid temps? I know, that was a while back and we’ve all slept since then.

But fear not, you may soon get the chance to relive those chilly days of Jan. 9-10 early next week. According to the National Weather Service, Sunday night through Tuesday morning looks to be perhaps even colder than it was when much of North Texas was blanketed in at least a couple inches of snow just over a week ago.

“Multiple days of frigid weather are expected following a Friday night/Saturday arctic front,” says the NWS. Low temperatures of 20 degrees on Sunday night and 19 degrees on Monday night are mixed with a 20% chance of snow late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

When we got the first taste of snow, temperatures stayed in the 30s for the most part; even at night, they were nowhere near dipping into the low 20s or below. When discussing the imminent arctic front, WFAA’s Greg Fields sounds the alarm on the dropping temps, but without worrying us too much.

“One thing is certain, it will get cold again this weekend into next week,” Fields reported on Thursday. “It is also certain this is not a repeat of February 2021. This is just a typical round of arctic air headed to North Texas. Mornings will be well below freezing and afternoons will be around freezing or a little above it for a few days. It doesn’t look record cold and doesn’t even look as cold as we were around a year ago when DFW dropped to 11° on January 15, 2024.”

As for the possibility of snow, Fields is also pretty reassuring.

“As a disturbance moves overhead Monday into Tuesday, we may see some light snow arrive in North Texas,” he reports. “Right now, any amounts look light and because of the cold temps we are not worried about any other types of wintry weather other than snow.”

Meteorologist Pete Delkus echoes his WFAA colleague’s forecast, writing on X that the upcoming freeze is “Just another typical winter arctic front headed to North Texas. Certainly very cold, but nothing unheard of for mid to late January.”
