Chuck’s Car Wash has long been a fixture on the Morning News‘ 10 Drops in the Bucket campaign, the compilation of the eye-soreiest eye sores in southern Dallas that Tod Robberson drives past and tsk-tsks at.
Chuck’s, which sits near the corner of Sunnyvale and Ledbetter, does seem to be a particularly seedy place, more open-air drug bazaar and loitering place for felons than a car wash — all just a block from an elementary school. The Dallas Police Department took note, initiating a six-month long investigation through its newly formed mid-level narcotics squad.
“As the investigation progressed, detectives were able to identify not only the street dealers, but the main suppliers,” according to a DPD statement. “This loose knit distribution ring fueled the drug activity and the subsequent quality of life issues which plagued the car wash and the neighboring community.”
That investigation ended yesterday with a sweep through the Sunnyvale/Ledbetter neighborhood that netted 10 arrests and the seizure of eight handguns, two stolen cars, crack (28.5 g), powder cocaine (2.2 g), marijuana (1 kg), K2 (31 baggies), and PCP (45.1 g).
Eight of those arrested (Justin Veasley, 26; Ricky Crosby, 31; Frances Robinson, 42; Alan Williams, 24; Herman Jones, 59; Shakeena Cephas, 26; Cardell Wynn, 52; and Arthur Jones, 29) were charged with manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance in a drug-free zone. Christopher Wilson, 28, was charged with possession of cocaine, and Billy Skinner, 43, was arrested on a theft warrant out of Tarrant County. All except Wilson are in the Dallas County Jail with bonds ranging from $5,000 to $100,000.
