It’s now been a year since President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House began, a mark that coincides with a wave of unrest that has swept through the U.S. after an ICE officer in Minneapolis shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three. Continuing the recent trend of large-scale protests consisting of demonstrations across the country, Dallas will host a Stop ICE Terror rally on Tuesday night.
“January 20th marks the anniversary of Trump’s inauguration,” reads an Instagram post announcing the rally. “This year we have seen the tactics of repression escalate from the kidnapping of our neighbors in broad daylight, the assault on free speech, the murder of Renee Nicole Good, Keith Porter, and so many more.”
Scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at City Hall Plaza, the ICE-focused protest will take place in the same spot that around 1,000 people gathered to protest ICE and the Trump administration on Jan. 8 after federal officials placed the blame for Good’s death on the victim.
Staff writer Emma Ruby reported from the protest, writing,
Good’s death has spurred a new wave of anger towards immigration enforcement. She was a mother and a U.S. citizen, and does not appear to have been involved in an ICE investigation. Some first-time protesters on Thursday described her killing as a wake-up call.
“The reason that I came is because the people who are supposed to protect us have failed. If things continue like this, [ICE and the Trump Administration] doesn’t need a reason to do things like this again,” said Kristin L., from Dallas.
Large-scale efforts have gained prominence since Trump reclaimed office and began looking to deliver on his promise to begin mass deportations and intensified ICE operations. The Hands Off! And No Kings protests made headlines in the spring, summer and fall thanks to hundreds of thousands of people filling town squares, major intersections and downtowns across the U.S. to voice opposition to not only Trump’s immigration policies but the the wars in Ukraine and Palestine, as well as Texas billionaire Elon Musk’s previous involvement in making Trump-approved cuts to many federal departments.
The Jan. 20 Dallas Stop ICE Terror National Shutdown rally is organized by a group of organizations, according to the Instagram post, including the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Indivisible Dallas, Vecinos Unidos DFW, among others.
