Some Lake Dallas residents are away from home today while authorities figure out why a nearby home exploded on Thursday night.

A Friday statement from the city of Lake Dallas, just south of Denton, said that emergency crews responded to a “utility related incident affecting several residences in the community.”

According to Fox 4, some who live near the house on the 600 block of Moseley Street, located just east of Lake Dallas Middle School, reported hearing an explosion before the building eventually collapsed from the fire.

“It was the biggest explosion I’ve heard ever,” Lake Dallas resident Jason Hughes told Fox 4. “It was pretty much gone,”

Video taken from cell phones shows smoke billowing from the house in the middle of the neighborhood. NBC 5 reported that one neighbor said the blast’s impact was more pronounced than the sound.

“It was like a ‘poom,’ like when a balloon pops. Like that. But hearing it was not compared to the feeling,” Thomas Morales told NBC 5. “I mean I was laying down and it shook the whole house. I thought our house was going to collapse.”

Atmos Energy crews along with Lewisville, Corinth and Highland Village police units also responded to the fire. Overnight, Atmos crews were seen digging near gas lines in the neighborhood. As of Friday afternoon, investigators have not announced the cause of the explosion or the status of the one person taken to the hospital for treatment.

The city says that some utility services may be “unavailable for several days in some areas while repairs are completed,” and that both the city and Atmos Energy will continue to assist with arranging accommodations for those in need.

“Out of an abundance of caution, some residents have been temporarily relocated while work is undergoing,” the city statement reads. “The majority of impacted residents are expected to be able to return to their homes later this evening.”
