Brad Hawkins: Why isn’t he the biggest star in local TV news? Seriously. He’s a genius.

Sad to say I was watching local TV news at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night; used to be I didn’t remember Saturday nights. (Actually, not so much.) Anyway, after USC beat Arizona 20-3, or whatever, WFAA-Channel 8 fired up its late newscast, anchored by our buddy Brad Hawkins and a female anchor we didn’t immediately recognize. (It was probably Shelly Slater, a new hire at WFAA.) At the end of the newscast, Channel 8 ran a piece about MTV’s new Latin-flavored offshoot, MTV Tr3s, which debuts today.

After it was over, Slater, we think, asked sorta generally, to no one in particular, “Wonder how you say Pimp My Ride in Spanish.” To which Hawkins wasted not a split second with his response: “Peemp my ride.” Then he kinda looked down at his desk and grinned; Slater, or whoever it was, kinda giggled. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the spirit of Texas. –Robert Wilonsky
