Texans don't have to be told it's spring. We don’t have to ask Alexa when it is or flip a calendar page to find out. We can see when it is when drive around the state. Every year at this time, the Bluebonnet, Texas’ beloved state flower, blooms along the sides of roads, lending gorgeous swaths of vibrant color to our drives.

You may not be an official Texan if you haven't posed for some sort of picture in a patch of Bluebonnets. Given some of the laws the Texas Legislature debates every session, we wouldn't be too surprised if that requirement is tucked away in an official capacity somewhere.

Thankfully, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) ensures that Bluebonnet hunters do not have to leave their hunting to chance. The agency has published an interactive map of wildflowers in rest areas and Texas parks that is perfect for planning your Bluebonnet tour.

Click on the blue dot in Fair Park, indicating the presence of the state flower, and you’ll see a pop-up screen telling you: “There are confirmed sitings of the Texas Bluebonnet in this park. The estimated bloom dates are from March 16 to April 30.”

See how easy that is? Beats trying to track down that one spot you think you recognize from your sister-in-law’s Instagram post from 2018. You know, the one where she gets her entire family of eight to wear matching white dress shirts and blue jeans? Don’t mess with that. Just use this TxDOT map instead.

This map will be especially helpful this year, as it has been reported that fewer Bluebonnets will bloom in Texas due to drought conditions in Central Texas.
