One Guess What Downtown Really Needs

UCR Urban's Jack Gosnell
-- who helped convince Forest City to redo the Merc and the Continental -- is among those who've been charged with recruiting retail to downtown. Which, presumably, is why Aaron Gentry, our pal Justin Terveen and the You+Dallas crew accompanied Gosnell on a tour of downtown, during which he talks about what killed its hustle and bustle way back when (and encounters a driver unfamiliar with our wonderful one-way streets). He also offers suggestions for its rebirth. And by "suggestions," I mean "suggestion." And by "suggestion," I mean "retail." Didn't even have to pay for a study.

KEEP THE DALLAS OBSERVER FREE... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
