Support the independent voice of Dallas and help keep the future of Dallas Observer free.
If you're looking for the proper way to lament-ebrate today's firing of Dallas Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson -- who, yes, loses his gig whilst Texas Rangers skipper Ron Washington keeps his, as so many of you have pointed out -- look no further than this eBay auction featuring an item from Dallas' other pro basketball team. Dallas-based Heritage Auction Gallery is trying to unload a 1972-'73 season game-worn Dallas Chaparrals jersey that once belonged to Mike Maloy, whose entire pro career apparently consisted of stints with the Virginia Squires and Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association, despite his having been drafted in the 10th round by the Boston Celtics in 1970. Asking price started at $425, and there have been three bids thus far for an auction ending May 3. $4.25 seems much more reasonable, to be honest. --Robert Wilonsky
Keep the Dallas Observer Free... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Dallas with no paywalls.
