The Dallas suburbs may get dragged from time to time for being boring or quiet or benign, but you know what? A lot of folks moving to the ‘burbs are cool with all of that because those calm qualities often suggest that the town in question is also pretty safe.

A pair of North Texas suburbs have been named among the safest in the United States. In a recently released survey from personal finance website SmartAsset, McKinney and Frisco landed high in the final results, securing the No. 9 and No. 10 spots, respectively.

“Both located in Collins County, they have some of the lowest drug overdose death rates statewide, and also score particularly well for crime,” noted the SmartAsset summary.

To conduct the study, SmartAsset compared data for 360 places within a 15 to 45-minute drive of the 100 largest U.S. cities with at least 5,000 residents. Metrics, including violent crime rate, property crime rate, drug poisoning mortality rate, and even median monthly housing costs, were taken into consideration.

It must be noted that McKinney is on a roll these days, too. The city was recently named the best city in America for renters. Neither McKinney nor Frisco offers terribly low housing costs, as both towns are booming with new homes, apartments and population growth.

“In McKinney, the median monthly housing payment is $2,101, compared to a median household income of $120,273,” SmartAsset states. “In Frisco, the figures are slightly higher with median housing payments at $2,389 and household incomes at $146,158.”

SmartAsset broke down the numbers that went into their rankings:

McKinney

  • Population: 202,314
  • Violent crime per capita: 0.0059
  • Property crime per capita: 0.0152
  • Number of traffic deaths per 100,000 people: 6.8868
  • Number of drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people: 10.0592
  • Percentage of adults reporting excessive drinking: 18.21%
  • Median monthly housing costs: $2,101
  • Median household income: $120,273

Frisco

  • Population: 210,238
  • Violent crime per capita: 0.0052
  • Property crime per capita: 0.0215
  • Number of traffic deaths per 100,000 people: 6.8868
  • Number of drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people: 10.0592
  • Percentage of adults reporting excessive drinking: 18.21%
  • Median monthly housing costs: $2,389
  • Median household income: $146,158

Both McKinney and Frisco consistently report crime rates lower than the national average, even if there are occasional high-profile crimes that take place in their respective city limits. Earlier this year, Frisco made national headlines when a 17-year-old student was stabbed and killed by another student during a track meet at Frisco ISD’s Kuykendall Stadium.

Lehi, Utah, near Salt Lake City, is ranked as the safest suburb in America for the second year in a row. Only one other Texas town made the top 20, with Spring, near Houston, coming in at No. 19.
