Speaking of the arts, Mayor Tom just fired off a missive naming former council member Veletta Forsythe Lill as the city’s new Arts District coordinator. Lill (our Best Council Member in '01) takes over the position previously held by Howard Hallum, who's currently chair of the board of directors for the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts.

Leppert -- who is out of state this week with his family, which is why he didn't attend the Shaws’ funeral yesterday -- had this to say about Lill: “With her great passion for the arts, her diplomatic skills and her high standing in the arts community and at City Hall, I know Veletta is a perfect fit for this role.” Bonus attraction: Lill was also Leppert's right-hand gal during the Trinity River toll road debates. --Sam Merten

Keep the Dallas Observer Free... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Dallas with no paywalls.
