The codeword spread fast, and more than 50 years later, stoners everywhere light a joint and soar into another realm on the twentieth day in April.
Nowadays, celebratory partakers aren’t limited to smoking weed. Actually, weed, or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or another similar variant, is available in almost any format. To the chagrin of Texas smokers, recreational weed isn’t legal despite grand efforts, but the state does have a form of legalized weed; you’ll just need a prescription first.
Legal Texas Weed
Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill in 2015 launching the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP), which allows people with certain chronic conditions to obtain a prescription for low-dose THC products. Some of the conditions eligible for a prescription are seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, autism, terminal cancer and incurable neurodegenerative diseases.THC is the chemical component extracted from marijuana plants that is chiefly responsible for the euphoric feeling associated with weed. To obtain a medical marijuana prescription, patients must see a TCUP-registered physician and be logged in a registry. Patients do not have to be above the age of 18 to receive a prescription.
“Texas really does it uniquely different than any other state,” Daryoush Austin Zamhariri, a store manager at one of the only doctor-owned spots that serve TCUP patients, Thrive Apothecary in Fort Worth, told the Observer in May of 2024. “They really do treat it like it’s any other medication that a doctor’s writing a prescription for.”
