I view of our story from yesterday — about Dallas ISD trustee Joyce Foreman’s troubling voting record and internet ranting — I present the video below, from the late-night wind-up of last week’s school board meeting. It shows Foreman giving her views on “modern education.” They’re telling.
I know Foreman some, and I know she’s a smart person. What this clip shows is how deeply and permanently alienated she is from anything I can conceive of as public education.
She has her reasons. They are not trivial. But when I think of public education, it is necessarily and by nature communal, shared, diverse and open to competitively offered ideas from all comers. Foreman will never trust a system in which she sees white people exercising significant influence. It’s a bottom line, and she’s never coming off it.
