As a countdown to the Dallas Observer’s “Best of Dallas” 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particular order. Some are little known, others celebrated. Some are pricey, others can be eaten on the cheap, but all are delicious to the extreme. No. 25: Salads at eatZi’s Market & Bakery
If “favorite” means a dish that gets ordered with astounding frequency, eatZi’s freshly tossed salads deserve a spot on this list.
Granted, there’s nothing inherently innovative about baby spinach, carrots, mushrooms, garbanzo beans and grilled chicken strips. The brilliance lies instead in eatZi’s remarkably efficient operation: The café understands its customers just want to get back to their desks or home after a long day (and, if that’s the case, there’s chilled wine in the cooler by the check-out.)
I imagine there are other salad shops and groceries that do an equally good job of putting together produce for time-strapped customers, but eatZi’s is my nearest spot for fresh, healthy, affordable, unbuttered food served quickly. I can’t help but favorite that.
