We all have one last chance to tell ourselves we're going to order something other than pad Thai, only to end up ordering the pad Thai.
On Monday, June 30, longtime Thai restaurant Bangkok at Greenville Avenue is closing for good after 32 years of serving the neighborhood the essence and flavors of Thai cooking.
Joe and Sunny Pumphaung have run the restaurant since shortly after Joe became the new owner in the early 1990s. He grew up in a family of restaurateurs in Thailand and studied culinary arts at the Royal Family's prestigious cooking school.
More than food, though, he learned the art of fruit and vegetable carving and floral arrangement, which reflects the importance of presentation, beauty, and tradition in Thai culture.
The couple also owned two sister restaurants to Bangkok at Greenville, Bangkok City (now closed) and Bangkok at Beltine, which will remain open but under new ownership.
When he took over Bangkok City, he married Sunny, and they spent their lives building Bangkok at Greenville, rooted in family, culture and community.
“While this was not an easy decision, we know in our hearts that it’s time,” said Sunny. “We’re so proud of the memories and meals shared here. Bangkok has been our home, and we’re grateful to have shared it with so many.”
The couple chose to close the restaurant after operational costs increased, and they wanted to spend time with their aging parents.
Which leaves us with two more weeks to irresponsibly order our comfort Thai takeout spot instead of cooking at home. Again. But who's counting with a deadline like that?
We're all about to be left to find our new staple Thai food restaurant, but not before the Bangkok at Greenville loyalist bid all their farewells on Facebook.
In the restaurant's post about their decision, locals took to the comments to express their gratitude:
"Thank you for being a cultural icon for the city of Dallas. We have been enjoying your delicious food for many years. Best wishes to you and your family. Thank you for giving us the chance to say goodbye," wrote Julie Wade Robinson.
Others have been longtime visitors to the restaurant, like Tanya Mejia, who wrote, "Awww, we have been coming here since 2007. They saw me go from dating my husband to having our 2 girls, and them now being 8/12 years old. Thank you for the amazing food!!"
And if the couple ever went back to Thailand, Irma Kusuma would follow: "Awe!!! Update me on your next adventure, please, and if you go to Thailand, I will come visit."
So if you’ve ever loved a plate of food enough to order it twice in one week, there are two weeks left to do it — one last comforting bite at the place that got it right for 32 years.
