Honeybird, a gourmet sandwich, doughnut, and coffee shop, has opened its new location in Plano. It shares a similar menu with the Flower Mound original but has an even better restaurant layout with an open patio, perfect for those coming summer days.

The doughnuts at Honeybird have enjoyed a bit of viral fame recently due to their extravagant nature, with different flavored toppings, drizzles and over-the-top garnishes. We were lured in and decided to visit their newest location.

Big sliding glass doors separate the space from the large patio. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a huge display of doughnuts inside a glass display case.

Honeybird also offers breakfast items like biscuit sandwiches and breakfast tacos. There are also fried chicken sandwiches, spicy or regular, with side options like french fries, tater tots and truffle fries. Various drink options include coffee, espresso, matcha, tea and some signature drinks. And, of course, there are the gourmet donuts.

We decided to try the Spicybird Biscuit, a popular selection, with ancho sauce and pickles (there's a non-spicy option too). For a drink, we ended up selecting the sakura matcha, made with sakura powder (Cherry Blossom powder), milk, vanilla syrup, cream foam and unsweetened matcha.

The spicy chicken biscuit exceeded our expectations and had the perfect amount of heat. The chicken cutlet was very tender, with a thick layer of seasoning on the crust. The buttermilk biscuit was soft to bite into, and the smoked paprika mayo was a perfect condiment. The star of the show, however, was a layer of crunchy pickles, adding a necessary crunch.

The sakura matcha was half pink and half green, but once it was mixed, the sakura and matcha flavors meshed perfectly, rendering an earthy, almost floral taste that hinted at rose water. It was the perfect amount of sweetness; we could have finished it in one gulp.

For the pastries, we first tried the glazed doughnut holes, which were slightly bigger and thicker than usual, with a perfect glaze, like biting into a little cake. The glazed Nutella cronut was just a regular glazed donut with Nutella and nuts on top, but plain on the inside. It would be a good option if someone wants something classic and not too crazy.

The churro tasted exactly like a churro, just softer because of the cronut base. Regardless, the sugar mixed with the dough reminded us of an Auntie Annie's cinnamon sugar pretzel (without the cinnamon).

Our favorite was the cookies and cream. It has cookies and cream inside and is swirled on top with Oreo crumbs and a whole cookie on top. This was like biting into a creamy paradise; the soft inner doughnut mixes with the sweet, soft cookies and cream filling, satiating the hardest-to-please sweet tooth.

Honeybird knows what they're doing, and our mistake was going close to closing time, so the donuts were not as fresh, but it was all still very enjoyable.
