Ask anyone from Michigan about Koegel’s, and their eyes will light up. They may even start to sweat a bit.
Since the early 1900s, The Koegel Meat Company has ingrained itself into Michigan’s culture. The meat products, from Polish sausages to the notoriously polarizing pickled bologna, are found in refrigerators all over The Wolverine State.
The man who started it all was Albert Koegel, a German immigrant who mastered the art of the cased meat before arriving in Flint, Michigan, in 1916. That’s where Koegel started his business, where only he and a handful of trusted employees ran the entire operation.
Now? There are upwards of 100 employees. And the product line, which then only offered a few products, has grown to more than 30.
Michiganders (like my father) swear by Koegel’s. And he’s right — once you’ve experienced the greatness of Koegel meats on the grill, nothing is quite the same after. And now, North Texans can experience Koegel’s thanks to an annual winter tour.
From Jan. 31 to Feb. 5, Koegel’s will be in North Texas (see schedule below). They’ll start in Arlington and then head to Frisco, Allen and Mesquite before moving on. Among the items on hand: Vienna sausages, jalapeno and cheese sausages, Detroit-style chili, Flint Coney Island sauce, red hot frankfurters, pickled bologna (don’t knock it til you try it), Polish sausage, franks, brats, Braunschweiger (German-style smoked and cured sausage), summer sausage and thick-sliced bologna. The complete list of items for sale is here.
