Garrison Brothers has the distinction of being Texas’ first legal distillery. Founded in 2006 by Dan and Nancy Garrison, Garrison Brothers bourbon first entered the market in 2010 and has turned out some epic bottles. Last October, Garrison Brothers’ Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon was named the best bourbon at the Global Spirit Awards in Las Vegas.
Fresh off that win, Garrison Brothers has announced a new limited edition of their popular Balmorhea bourbon blend, the sales of which will support a great cause in the process. On March 1, Garrison Brothers will release 1,000 bottles of a limited-edition Balmorhea Cask Strength bourbon for sale, hand-selected by Garrison’s master distiller Donnis Todd.
Proceeds from the sale of this expression will support the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (TPWF), the non-profit arm of the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. March 1 is also Texas Independence Day, which presents a prime opportunity for Garrison Brothers to team up with TPWF to support projects that conserve and enhance Texas’ lands, waters and wildlife.
“For the second year in a row, Garrison Brothers has chosen TPWF as a beneficiary of its Texas Independence Day celebration proceeds, and we greatly appreciate their generous support of our mission through the years,” TPWF executive director Anne Brown says.
For the uninitiated, Garrison Brothers’ Balmorhea has been a staple of their lineup since it was first released in 2017. The bourbon starts as all bourbons do, barreled into new white oak barrels and left to age for four years. As temperatures change with the seasons, the barrels impart flavor and color into the bourbon. Balmorhea is unique in that it gets barreled again in new barrels for another year of aging after the first pass. The regular Balmorhea is bottled at 115 proof, and Todd describes its flavor as “bourbon candy in a bottle.”
Todd has selected 11 single barrels for this limited edition that meet his discerning whiskey palate, and as they are being marketed as “cask strength,” we imagine the proof will be notably higher. The bottles will only be offered for sale in Texas at the Garrison Brothers distillery in Hye on Saturday, March 1. In fact, Garrison Brothers will limit sales of all Balmorhea blends to Texas beginning this year, so owning a bottle gives you some bragging rights over your bourbon friends in other states.
The limited-edition bottles will be priced at a hefty $250 each, but $50 from each bottle will go directly to TPWF, so you can combine your bourbon sipping with supporting a good cause.
Garrison Brothers is also taking the opportunity to celebrate 15 years of selling Texas bourbon to the world. In addition to the limited-release sale, there will be distillery tours, live music, line dancing and plenty of food and other fundraisers during the day to support TPWF. Tucked into the heart of Texas Hill Country between Fredericksburg and Austin, the area is worth a visit whether you’re a bourbon fan or not.
