If it is a party, it's certainly a popular one, but it seems to be one without much planning. That's because it was called just a few days ago, indirectly, by the ice cream parlor's owner, Cindy Chung, who took to Instagram to announce that the shop would be closing for good on Tuesday, August 5.
The news was abrupt, and a came as a surprise to all who have made the Mockingbird Station dessert outpost a frequent postgame destination, especially after a movie at Angelika Film Center or dinner at Dallas Grilled Cheese Co.
"They were really sad," Chung says of her regular customers. "People were swarming this weekend to buy up everything."
As for the closure, Chung cites the shop's location.
"The traffic at Mockingbird Station really isn't there," she says. "We're seeing some growth after post-COVID years, but it's just not enough to warrant staying there."
Since its opening in May 2019, Chung's shop has stuck to its brand, matching fresh milk with organic raw honey, all sourced from Texas farms. Few treats tasted better than the shop's signature, namesake ice cream flavor, but we still came back around to sample more of its creative offerings, like the peach and rosemary flavor.
Chung expressed optimism about the future of those delicious flavors, telling us over the phone that she's in talks with new partners to reopen the shop in a new capacity. She says that she's considering a mobile option, like an elevated ice cream truck or a new storefront in North Dallas.
In the meantime, a break is a long time coming for Chung, whose boutique shop survived COVID and six years of the ebbs and flows of dessert trends. For as long as her time away is, we're hoping this isn't a goodbye to Pure Milk & Honey, but a "see you later."
"It's been a long time since I've done anything except this," Chung says. "I'd love to take a couple of months off just to regroup and see what we can do with this idea."
