We don’t get too too many chances to talk jazz in these here DC9 parts–although, really, when you have the time, you really should do yourself a favor and check out the great Monday night Bad Ass Jazz gigs at the Amsterdam Bar in Expo Park–so pardon this little sidetracking.
Anyway, remember last week when we mentioned the upcoming big band album from Roy Hargrove? Well, even though Emergence, Hargrove’s first foray into leading a big band on record, won’t see the light of day until August 25, the folks handling the record’s release have been kind enough to pass along a track for your downloading and listening pleasure.
After the jump, check out “Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey,” which is about as classic a big band sound as you can get. Tough not to picture a packed dancefloor from the roaring ’20s while listening to this classic take, with its piano-based arrangement and lush horn adornments and flourishes.
