Mike Wilson, the managing editor of Nate Silver’s ESPN-owned data journalism project, FiveThirtyEight, will take the reins as The Dallas Morning News‘ new editor-in-chief on February 16. He replaces Bob Mong, who is retiring after 13 years at the helm.
Wilson is a former managing editor at the Tampa Bay Times, a paper known in journalism circles for producing robust investigative and narrative journalism, as well as losing lots and lots of money.
“I’m honored to have this opportunity to lead The Dallas Morning News,” Wilson, a Connecticut native, said in the release. “I look forward to joining with the Morning News staff to deliver a news report worthy of one of America’s great cities.”
DMN Jim Moroney expects Wilson to bridge the print-to-digital gap for the paper.

“I was looking for someone with experiences leading a traditional newsroom’s transition to the digital environment, and also someone who had the curiosity and courage to step out and lead a pure play digital site that published important journalism. In Mike, I found both,” he said.
After Thursday afternoon’s announcement, Wilson was quick to ask for barbecue recommendations on Twitter. The answer to that query’s obvious (Pecan Lodge, duh), as is where Wilson should take up residence in the Metroplex — the most urban and sophisticated neighborhood we’ve got: Valley Ranch.
