No doubt you’ve heard about the shooting last night at a Pleasant Grove apartment complex that left one Dallas Police officer and a bystander wounded and the gunman, Kenneth Horton, dead. Moments ago, the DPD sent along this statement from Dallas Police Chief David Brown:

Last night Dallas officers responded to several 911 calls regarding an
active shooter in the apartment complex at 1170 N. Prairie Creek Road.
Two of the responding officers very quickly came under fire from the
gunman whose actions had prompted the calls. Their squad car was struck
at least eight times by rounds fired from a rifle and one officer,
Richard Whitt, was seriously wounded in the unprovoked attack. Officer
Whitt, and a private citizen who was also shot by the gunman, were both
transported by ambulance to a Dallas area hospital where they are being
treated for their injuries. I ask that both remain in your thoughts and
prayers in the weeks to come as they begin the long road to recovery.

The gunman in this case died at the scene. The Dallas County Medical
Examiner’s Office reported today that his death was a suicide. It is
believed that prior to his death this individual fired some 36 rounds
throughout the complex. I am particularly proud of the heroic actions
of all the officers at the scene who responded quickly to the original
calls from the public and tried diligently to locate the gunman as they
worked to protect apartment residents and themselves. They are all a
credit to the department and to the city of Dallas.
