Burgers are so popular in Texas that state Representative Dan Flynn recently proposed making the hamburger the state’s official state sandwich, but Food & Wine could only find one example worthy of including on its new “25 Best Burgers in the U.S.” list.
Tom’s Perini’s Ranch Burger, served at his eponymous Buffalo Gap steakhouse, was singled out for its open-flame flavor. The burger’s smothered with mushrooms, onions, green chiles and cheese, making it one of 11 burgers on the list that’s actually a cheeseburger (The distinction isn’t academic to burger purists, many of whom consider Texas home.)
According to Food & Wine, the epicenter of serious burger cookery is New York City, where five of the listed burgers are located. Other big cities with multiple honorees include Atlanta, Boston and Chicago.
But Texas’ best burger count is about to double. Food & Wine‘s top burger comes from In-N-Out.
